November Marks 20 Years of National Scholarship Month!

Tuesday, October 30, 2018
(CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA) - This November marks the 20th anniversary of National Scholarship Month (NSM). This annual observance is a movement that was established to raise awareness about the power of scholarships and the impact they have, not only on individual scholars, but on our global community in general. Sponsored by National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA), this year’s focus is “Together We Rise: Collaborative Connections for Scholarship Success”.

“Twenty years ago, Scholarship America initiated National Scholarship Month to increase private sector awareness of and support for students pursuing a higher education,” noted Robert C. Ballard, president and CEO, Scholarship America. “The most important component of that support comes in the form of public and private scholarships, and today the need

for scholarships is even greater. Over the past two decades the cost of a higher education has doubled, and student debt continues to rise. Congratulations to NSPA, the official sponsor of National Scholarship Month, for continuing to bring awareness to the power of scholarships and the impact they have on students' lives and our community.”

In the past, in addition to raising awareness about the need for scholarships, NSM also helped to raise funds for the Dollars for Scholars program under Scholarship America. Under Scholarship America, the MSN tradition was well-supported and the annual festivities included gala events in Washington D.C. and Minneapolis, MN to kick-off the month-long campaign. Some of the past guest speakers and spokespersons were Tom Brokaw, Colin Powell, Miss America, and Garfield the cat!

Even though NSM hasn’t received much attention in recent years, scholarship providers, institutions, companies, and organizations around the country continue the tradition by hosting various activities related to scholarships and college access throughout November. Fastweb, the nation's recognized leader in helping students pay for college, is challenging scholars to apply for ten scholarship awards during the month of November. SalliMae increases its Plan for College Sweepstakes to $5,000 every NSM to commemorate the holiday. And Consumer Reports published a list of tips for scoring scholarships to honor NSM 2018.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of this important holiday, in conjunction with the upcoming NSPA 20th Anniversary, NSPA is launching a new website in November dedicated to NSM. “Our goal is to breathe new life into this annual observance. It’s extremely important to promote awareness because college funding and access not only benefit individual scholars, it also impacts the greater global community. We’re excited to see how it evolves over the next few years.”, says Nick Safko, Communications Coordinator at NSPA.

NSPA invites you to participate in NSM in any way you can. Search the web to see what’s happening in your local community. Send us your own story about the power of scholarships so we can share it with the greater scholarship community. Send us ideas for future NSM activities, events, and campaigns.
