Supporting Students in Transition and During Their First Year

Description

Increasingly more academically underprepared and first-generation students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are transitioning to enrolling in college. College access organizations and institutions of higher learning can play a significant role in supporting their success by designing proactive solutions and unique action plans dedicated to close the academic, financial, and transitionary gaps. This session will discuss the following five key features that are proven to directly contribute to the success of at-risk student populations:

1. designing intentional co-curricular experiences
2. providing spaces to combat self-doubt and stereotype
3. establishing a foundational understanding of integrative learning
4. emphasizing the importance of the student-faculty relationships
5. promoting an environment that welcomes and embraces students posing productive questions

Dr. Richie Gebauer

Presenter Bio
Dr. Richie Gebauer is the Executive Director of the First Year Experience and Student Transitions at Cabrini University, the founding director of Cabrini’s learning community program, and serves as the Faculty Director of the IMPACT (Leadership) Living and Learning Community teaching writing, social justice, English and leadership studies coursework.

He currently serves as the President of the Learning Communities Association (LCA) and is a member of the editorial review board for both the Learning Communities Research and Practice (LCRP) and the Journal for the First-Year Experience and Student Transitions. Dr. Gebauer’s current research focuses on investigating the types of collaboration that exist between academic and student affairs in learning community programs as well as the impact of learning communities on the practice of integrative learning among first-year college students.

Dr. Gebauer’s degrees include a B.A. in Psychology from Franklin and Marshall College, a M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in College Student Personnel Administration from James Madison University, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Cabrini University.
