Colleges & Universities Learning Circle


Join us for a panel discussion of emergency aid and completion programs at colleges & universities. The panelists will address effective practices the following areas:

  • emergency fund structure
  • application and review process
  • challenges and successes
  • securing long term funding

This program is part of the Colleges & Universities Learning Circle series, but is open to everyone, regardless of organization type.

Panelist Bios

Dr. Sumiko Martinez is the Associate Director of Scholarships and Student Funding at the University of Utah’s College of Nursing and works with students from the baccalaureate to the doctoral level. She has 13 years’ experience in higher education and previously worked in community outreach for the Utah System of Higher Education. As a first-generation college graduate and a scholarship recipient herself, she has a deep appreciation for how scholarships can change a person’s life.

Carolyn Nelson is the Director of Scholarships at Minnesota State University, Mankato, a public, regional university has over 10 years of progressive experience in Admissions, New Student Programs and Scholarship programming. She annually administers approximately $1.5 million in recruitment scholarship dollars for new students as well as provides oversight for over $4 million dollars of campus and foundation awards. Carolyn holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science and master's degree in Educational Leadership.

Johnna Hargens-Brown is the Director for Scholarships and Grants at Bellevue University, in Bellevue, Nebraska. She is responsible for managing and developing strategies, processes, and procedures to effectively administer all institutionally related scholarships and grants for the University. As a stand-alone department, Johnna's team collaborates with the Financial Aid Department, Student Financial Services, Student Finance, the Business Office, Enrollment, Advising, Athletics, Advancement and the individual colleges to ensure a smooth centralized process for current and prospective students to apply for scholarships.
