Title:

More Than a Check: Leadership, Professional, and Personal Development to Ensure Scholar Success

Presenters:

Chelsea Muhlhahn, Senior Assistant Director, Stamps President's Scholars Program, Georgia Institute of Technology and Jamie Williams, Director of Scholarships, Coca-Cola Scholars

Description:

To make the scholarship award about more than just the financial award, providers should engage scholars in the critical leadership, personal, and professional competencies they will need to be successful and represent their organizations well. A focus on anticipated developmental impact, even at the application stage, ensures that scholars understand the communities they are about to join and that they mature into a vibrant, engaged, and supportive alumni network. The two presenters, who have worked with multiple scholars programs before their current roles, will share the experiences and initiatives that have the most impact on scholars' growth as leaders and successful professionals.

Presenter Bios:

CHELSEA MUHLHAHN BIO

As Senior Assistant Director of the Stamps President’s Scholars Program at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Chelsea directs the recruitment and selection process that ultimately selects 40 scholars from nearly 18,000 applications and manages the yield and onboarding process, which includes a First-Year Retreat and outdoor leadership expedition. Chelsea also assists with the study-travel trips, a freshman seminar course, advising, and leadership development. Prior to Tech, she served as an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of California, Berkeley, and as part of the advising team with US-UK Fulbright Commission. Chelsea began her tenure in scholarship programs with the National Scholars Program at Clemson University in South Carolina.

JAMIE WILLIAMS BIO

As Director of Scholarships for the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Jamie collaborates with colleagues to manage the scholar life-cycle -- managing recruiting strategies for prospective applicants, coordinating the selection of 150 new Coke Scholars from nearly 200,000 applicants, and developing a portfolio of professional and leadership development experiences for Scholars. Prior to joining the Foundation, Jamie was director of the National Scholars Program at Clemson (S.C.) University from 2002-2015, in addition to serving as associate director of the Clemson Honors College from 2009-2015. In 2006, Jamie led the effort to create USPAA, the Undergraduate Scholars Program Administrators Association, a professional body supporting the work of campus-based scholars programs, and served as president and a board member from 2009-2013. Jamie currently serves on the NSPA board of directors.
