Executive Director Amy Weinstein Leaving NSPA

Wednesday, May 3, 2017

Dear NSPA Members,

It is with mixed emotions that I share I will be leaving the NSPA on June 16, 2017, after over 13 years. My work with NSPA members, the Board of Directors, and staff has been immensely rewarding. Over the years, I have met and collaborated with devoted and caring professionals focused on supporting students to achieve their higher education dreams through scholarships. Because I am passionate about access to and completion of higher education, I have loved spending my days in this pursuit. I will remain committed to this mission at the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) as their Chief Operating Officer.

Many people, significantly our outstanding staff, Board of Directors, and supporting organizations, have helped the NSPA advance to where we are now. I am so proud of the work that we have all accomplished to further this field and incentivize people and/or entities to give scholarships for higher education. As the cost of college continues to rise and there is increased pressure on state and federal student financial aid, private scholarships will only become more critical to help bring access to, create equity in, and support the completion of higher education.

The NSPA has evolved from a grassroots organization with a little over 100 members to a respected source for scholarship professionals. The NSPA is now the largest membership organization focused on helping scholarship providers create and enhance effective scholarship practices, and is the repository of unique scholarship-related resources and member profiles. Our joint publication with Scholarship America, written by the Institute for Higher Education Policy, Private Scholarships Count: Access to Higher Education and the Critical Role of the Private Sector, remains the pioneering report on the private sector’s many contributions to scholarships and the students impacted. We now have over 400 member organizations and serve over 1,100 scholarship professionals. Our annual conference has grown considerably from 145 people to over 400 attendees! We have brought awareness to the negative impacts of the displacement of university grants when private scholarships are added to award packages and wrote a white paper on the topic. The NSPA remains one of the only organizations that brings together scholarship professionals working inside and outside of colleges and universities. The diversity of organizations is what makes us interesting and strong.

The state of the NSPA is stable and poised for positive developments to come. The NSPA Board of Directors is working with a high-quality search and consulting firm, Mission Capital in Austin, Texas, to conduct a national search for my replacement. After June 16, Ms. K.J. McCorry will be the interim Executive Director until the search is complete and the new Executive Director is in place. Ms. McCorry is a consultant and has worked with the NSPA for many years and is familiar with our organization and strategic initiatives. The quality of member services that you receive from staff will be unchanged – the staff and Board are here to support the membership first and foremost.

It is too hard for me to say good-bye to such a compassionate, talented, and effective group of people. I prefer to say that I will see you around, and it is my sincerest hope that I do. Thank you for all you do to support students in achieving their higher education dreams; to me, this is one of the most important achievements there is. Please feel free to reach out to me at aweinstein@scholarshipproviders.org prior to June 16, or Larry Sparkman, NSPA’s President at larry.sparkman@usm.edu. K.J. McCorry, the Interim Executive Director, will be available for communications after June 5: kjmccorry@scholarshipproviders.org. Please keep a look out for the new Executive Director job announcement and contact information for the search committee. We would love for NSPA members to share the announcement with your colleagues and networks.
