NSPA Member NCAN Provides Resources to FAFSA Filers During IRS Data Retrieval Tool Outage

The Department of Education and the IRS published a joint statement on March 30 announcing that FAFSA's IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) function will be unavailable until the beginning of the next FAFSA application season in October 2017. The tool will be upgraded to better protect against potential data security breaches.
NSPA member National College Access Network (NCAN) has been covering this issue since the beginning. This NCAN blog post shares the latest and makes recommendations to the Department of Education and the IRS. This April 10 article from Inside Higher Ed reports that FAFSA applications may have already slowed, and that many students may already be missing out on critical institutional and grant aid.
NCAN is encouraging the IRS to provide direction on the FAFSA website to help students and families complete the FAFSA without the DRT. In the meantime, you can still help students file the FAFSA. The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis and NCAN have generously made their March 15 "FAFSA IRS DRT: What Now?"webinar materials--including the webinar recording, slides, and sample documents--available here. Please share these resources with anyone helping students file the FAFSA during the DRT outage.
