Community College Research Center at Columbia University: Unpacking the Transfer Playbook: How Colleges Can Improve Transfer Outcomes

Presenter: John Fink, Research Associate, Community College Research Center
Presenter Biography: John Fink is a research associate at the Community College Research Center (CCRC) conducting research on student course-taking and enrollment patterns, two- and four-year institution transfer partnerships, high school dual enrollment students, and implementation and impacts of “guided pathways” reforms. John led analysis and co-authored the 2016 Tracking Transfer report, co-authored the 2016 Transfer Playbook, and he has been published in New Directions for Student Services, the Journal of American College Health, and the Journal of Student Affairs Research & Practice. Prior to joining CCRC, he advised transfer students and created a comprehensive support program for community college transfer students at the University of Maryland, College Park where he also earned a M.A. in College Student Personnel.

Description: Drawing on National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) data tracking an entering community college cohort, this webinar will offer a national perspective on institutional and statewide effectiveness in helping students to transfer and earn bachelor's degrees. Results show large variation in institutional performance, even among similar types of institutions. The Transfer Playbook, published in May, 2016, documents the practices of pairs of two- and four-year institutions identified nationally (using NSC data) as very successful in helping students to transfer and earn bachelor's degrees. Based on visits to more than a dozen of these highly-effective institutions, findings from the Transfer Playbook will be unpacked.
